What is Niacin Vitamin B3?
Niacin Vitamin B3 is known by several names: nicotinic acid, niacin, and vitamin PP. It is a water-soluble vitamin. Our body can make limited amounts of Niacin Vitamin B3 itself from the amino acid tryptophan. However, we get most of it through our diet. Good sources of Niacin Vitamin B3 include vegetables, whole grains, dairy, nuts, and meat and fish. An old-fashioned meatball provides a whopping 45% of the reference intake of it for an adult.
Niacin flush
Please be aware that Niacin Vitamin B3 can have the side effect of temporarily causing red, itchy patches on the skin and making you feel warm. This so-called “niacin flush” is harmless and disappears about an hour after ingestion. However, according to mycologist Paul Stamets this flush actually helps to improve blood flow, since the small blood vessels open up more. When niacin is consumed together with mushrooms or truffles, this would allow the active to penetrate deeper into the body.
